That makes sense. You always get out of something what you put into it, and if you're not putting any effort into it, then you're not going to get anything out of it. That's just like anything you study. You're not going to understand the material and get a good grade on a test if you don't study for it before hand!

This is a good point about preparation and reflection. I think many of us suffer complaining hearts about worship for the same reasons.

I think another thing that people can mean when they say a study isn't "deep enough" is a little different though.

Sometimes they can mean that the study asks them questions about what the text says, but they never gets to asking what that text says ABOUT THEM, about the heart, and about how we either reflect the image of God, or how we fall short of that.

They can mean that the question doesn't use the word to dig deeply into them, to uproot chaff and re-plant good seed. Especially in dry times believers need help in figuring out how to apply the tools of the scripture to "tend the soil" and get traction on their own spiritual development again.
