Maybe if we distanced ourselves entirely from the false and pagan notion that the 1.5 hrs a week that we spend in instruction and worship is the ‘Church’, then we wouldn’t get snared in the equally false notion that we’re dependent on it and the leaders for our spiritual life! IMO, the notion that our spirit life depends on our gathering together in ceremony under one roof in a community comes from the pagan idea that it’s the only place where there’s a ‘priest’ who’s qualified to perform the ‘sacraments’ necessary for our salvation.
