Turkey Bowl 2007

Great day for the Turkey Bowl!  Look at those flakes of snow falling the whole game. One of Henry Michael's roommates took pictures of our game. It was one of my favorites because I got to quarterback a bit, I was on the same team with Henry Michael and my team was loaded with great players. It's ridiculous how some of these guys run, cut, catch and throw.  Only thing missing was my cousin Henry and his son Henry to make the day complete.

How about Adrian Peterson? Unbelievable! Unfortunately, we had to listen to the whole game because we were on the road coming back from S. Dakota. But at least we could hear it the whole way.

I don't know if the TV announcers made a bigger deal about the all-time single game rushing record, but the radio guys were so understated they sounded drugged. Very weird. He just rushed for more yards in one game than Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, Jim Brown, L.T., O.J. Simpson, Eric Dickerson, or anyone else ever. Amazing.

As for fantasy, I was really going downhill after my last trade thanks to the Ronnie Brown injury and the lack of productivity all of sudden from Burris, Portis and Roy Williams. But this week Portis exploded, Kitna did great and Winslow got me 23 points. Love that TE. I lead my division again!

My Redskins won in OT after their massacre last week to the Patriots and my Chiefs lost to the great Favre. I had my mom tape the Patriots/Colts game for me and Lois and I laid around and watched it without knowing the outcome after small group. Great game, sad ending.

Fantasy Football Update

Five games into the season and I haven't yet posted on my Fantasy football team.

First, a little on my league. I'm in a league with a bunch of guys I got to know through coaching our kids in football about eight years ago. It's expanded beyond that, but we're the main guys who meet every week at Throwbacks or some other sports bar to watch Monday Night Football and conduct trades, etc. There's twelve teams and we've been at if for years. It started as a father/son thing, but most of the sons are now 21. Many are still in the league.

I'm 4-1 so far. I've been living on the edge. On the first week, after getting high points in the league, I traded about five players with the commission (known for his trade deals). It was a good trade, but I got rid of a couple of guys I really like. This Monday we made another blockbuster trade and only time will tell.

But here's the kicker: I traded Romo for Kitna. Am I crazy? Maybe. But I did it for the other guys I got in the deal. I gave up Shawn Alexander, Reggie Wayne and Jeremy Shockey for Ronnie Brown (#1 running back), Plaxico Burress (#2 receiver) and Kellen Winslow (I had traded him away and regretted it, he's rated three in our league where catches for TE's get a point each). Hated losing Romo, but a quarterback doesn't win championships in this league.

Usually we leave shortly after half on Mondays but two of the guys are Dallas fans and we stayed. As a Redskins fan, we have a lot of fun. Am I glad we stayed. What a game! Even if those Cowboys did win. You have to admire them.

Okay, did I do well on my trade? Any opinions out there?

Listening In

Listening to the Super Bowl online here in Haiti. Reminds me of the last time I listened to the Colts in the Super Bowl in Miami when the game was blacked out. I'm not paying close attention like the last time when I was a Colts' fan and Unitas was playing. Score 19 to 14. Colts just made a field goal.

I think I just may have seen the Super Bowl (no disrespect intended to Bears fans)! Sorry Dana. Congratulations Tony Dungy and Manning! Finally you've made it. What an incredible game.

No Super Bowl for Me

I discovered last week that I scheduled myself to be in Haiti during the Super Bowl. What was I thinking? I don't think I've missed one since I started paying attention the season of Super Bowl V. Had to listen on the radio to that one between my favorite team at the time, the Baltimore Colts led by my hero Johnny Unitas and my all-time nemesis Dallas Cowboys. It was in Miami, I think, so it wasn't broadcast on TV for us. Things sure have changed.

Missing the game will be a bit of a deal for me if the Colts make it in. I'd love to see Dungy and Manning make it. And even though the Colts broke my heart in the mid 70's and I shifted all my loyalties to the Redskins, I still get a bit of a thrill when I see the horse shoe on those helmets.

But what I'll miss most is the party and seeing the commercials with a bunch of other people. I'll watch it taped when I get back, but it just won't be the same.

Could have been worse. Dana's been in Haiti for two weeks and missed his beloved New England in the playoffs. I almost feel sorry for him. :)

I'm Not Going to Disneyland

No Fantasy Bowl appearance this year for me. Lost in the finals to the Commish by a slim margin. In fact, if Tony Gonzalez had made one touchdown on Sunday night I would be in. The tipped pass he almost got would have gotten me the win.

Oh well. It was a fun year. What I loved most about this year was the time with my fantasy football friends. We meet on Monday nights at various sports bars for the first half of the game, but by Thanksgiving we usually stop meeting. Not this year. We were together for the last time on Monday (given the next two Mondays being holidays). The other thing was having Tom join in with us this year. It made it even more fun for me.

I'm already devising strategy for next year and looking forward to a new season.

Fantasy Football Update

I won the first round of the playoffs in spite of my QB again (Trent Green this time). Sorry Tom and Anthony. You guys had a great run, but the old guy got you. Great performances from my kicker, Scobee (I picked him up about three weeks ago), and from Donald Driver got me the win. Two wins away from the championship, but I go up against the Commish this week (best record and highest point getter), so things don't look good. He's got Tomlinson. Need I say more?

Fantasy Football Update

I made the playoffs by the skin of my teeth. Third highest scorer in our 12 team league, but the second highest scorer and I barely made it. I'm up against Tom and Anthony Yanez's team in the first round and so far I'm losing, but there's still a lot of football to play. I won last week in spite of having Grossman as my QB! Minus points. This week I played Trent Green who did great last week and he's got 1 point so far and his game is in the fourth quarter. Just not meant to get quarterback points this year.
